Safety Moment - Improvement is always Incremental

20Dec

Improvement hardly ever happens with a bang...much more likely is to have improvement creep and ooze throughout the organization's processes and operations.

Yet, we want improvement to be immediate, big, and earth-shattering.

It just isn't that way, sadly.

This is a quick discussion of the power of noticing and celebrating small changes.

Listen and see what you think.

PAPod 152 - After 9/11 - Who Managed Safety on “the Pile?” Meet Ray Master

16Dec

After the 9/11 tragidy, who would manage safety programs in a pile of rubble and human remains - more importantly, how would you manage safety in an enviorment that has never happened before with pressures that are unimaginable at every level.

There were not processes or procedures.  There were no best practice learnings to be discovered.

Every part of this operation was emergent and sensitive.  What would you do if you where there to be a voice for safe and reliable operations/

Exactly what Ray Master did.  Learn, Learn, Learn.

Listen and see what you think.

Safety Moment - Engagement Demands You Do Something Engaging

13Dec

If we want our workers to be engaged.  We must give them a reason to engage - other than telling them that they matter.   We must do engaging things with our workforce.

Engagement Demands Engaging Subject Matter.

PAPod 151 - What is all this talk about Mindfulness - Ellen Langer is someone you should know.

9Dec

Mindfullness.

Why is it that everyone is talking about mindfullness.  From HRO's to Monks in Pagodas... everyone is talking about mindfullness.

Mindfullness is the ability to see something new in a world you live in everyday.

Listen and see what you think.  Be mindful while you listen.  What is new here?

Safety Moment - Noticing and Knowing

6Dec

There is a huge difference between noticing and knowing.

We often participate in a "collective ignoring" of the facts that exist in our organizations.   We see but we don't see.

We see but we don't see...

That is the difference between noticing and knowing:  Seeing.

Listen and see what you think.

PAPod 150 - Sidney Dekker and The Safety Anarchist

2Dec

Sidney Dekker's newest book is just out and I like this one a lot.

The Safety Anarchist is a book, not about anarchy, but about standing up to the traditional paradigm and calling out the future - and it does not look the same.

This book is a thoughtful discussion of the changes that have been taking place.  It is solid argument (in the academic form of that word) for change.   The reviews alone are worth reading.

Listen and see what you think.
