Safety Moment - On Being Right

Wednesday Feb 08, 2017

Wednesday Feb 08, 2017

Safety Podcast, Safety Program, Safety Storytelling, Investigations, Human Performance, Safety Differently, Operational Excellence, Resilience Engineering, Safety and Resilience Incentives
Being right is not nealy as valuable as being curious.  Being right simply re-inforces the fact that you were right.  You learn nothing and therefore you know nothing new.  It is far better to be curious than right.  When you are curious you are constantly learning.  Knowing more makes you smarter!
I hope you noticed that I did not use the word wrong.  I don't care much about being wrong either...I want you to know the power is in not knowing, the power is not so much in being right or being wrong.
Thanks for not being right all the time.  Thanks, also, for listening to the podcast.  Tell your friends, subscribe, and please, please, please, please write a nice review.  Those help a lot in getting the word out.

Compliance is a complex idea.  It seems simple, but in reality, compliance is very much in the eye of the person who is looking for compliance.  Carsten Busch has thought about this idea a lot and has some excellent ideas to share with the podcast audiance.  You will love this podcast.
Special thanks to both Carsten and ORCHSE.com.  Most special thanks to you for listening to the podcast.  You make the podcast go.

This safety moment is maybe the most important advice we can hear - and we don't hear it enough.
There is an old joke - "How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time!"  In many ways that old joke - I never said funny joke - is a good lesson for us.  Change happens one bite at a time - not all at once.
There is power in incrementalism.  Small changes matter!  We change the world one conversation at a time.   Don't forget that!
THANKS FOR BEING A PART OF THE PODCAST.  WE WON AN AWARD FOR HOW COOL WE ARE!  I chalk all of the credit to you.  Thanks for listening.

What can I say?  This is more of the great Shane Bush.  What a hoot it is to talk to Shane.  He is a Human Performance guru - and a wonderful human being.  It makes me feel young and excited to remember the times when Shane and I would travel around the country with Earl Carnes and talk about these ideas to whole rooms full of poeple who had never been introduced to Human Performance ideas.
And now Shane does it again for all of us on the Podcast.  Enjoy Shane and all he has to say about the world.   I know I really enjoyed having this conversation.

Cause is a construct - not a real thing.
Sorry you guys.  I know that makes some of you crazy and you want to argue with me a lot about why that idea is wrong.  The problem is that the idea is not wrong - Cause is a construct that is attributed to an event - it is never real and never singular.
This Safety Moment talks about this idea in a nice way.  See if you agree and see what you think.
Thanks for being a part of the podcast.  You are the best!

On March 22 and 23, 2017, Bob Edwards and Todd Conklin (that is me!) will offer an open workshop on Operational Learning and Learning Teams for Safety Improvement to be held in wonderful Las Vegas, Nevada.
You are not only invited - but your presence is requested and needed.  In fact, we cannot do the workshop without you.   This two-day workshop will give you all the tools and the practice to start operational learning improvement in your organization the very next day!  It is fun and I promise a great day.
Please plan on attending the workshop.  We would love to see you there!   This workshop is limited to the first 28 people - so don't think about it too long.

A couple of million times I have opened CNN and a forced-fed advertisement has started to play without my request.  Usually this kind of forced advertiseing just pisses me off - and I rush to click the ad closed as fast as possible...
But one got through - and I had to capture it for you.  I hate to play an advertisment, but this is different.  The BIGGEST PROBLEM WE HAVE IN OUR BUSINESS IS THE LACK OF A NULL SET...We can't count something that didn't happen.  You will never be able to write a report to your boss that discusses how many people did not get hurt at your work today.
I guess that problem exists with computer security as well.  IBM is trying to tackle this problem with this ad.  Listen carefully and see what you think.
Thanks for listening to the podcast.  Hope you are having a great 2017.   Tell your friends and subscribe - write a review as well.   Thanks for listening!

This episode of the PreAccident Podcast is taken from a recent YouTube video that was posted early last month.  The video can be viewed here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCEzEVJkO1U.  Needless to say, this video caused quite a stir among the safety community - but is it the right kind of stir?
It is easy to say this is the result of a bad worker making a bad decision.   Almost too easy to say - but if we blame the worker what have we learned about creating safe capacity in field work?
Thanks for listening to this thought prevoking episode.  Thanks also for listening to all the podcasts.   Take a moment and tell a freind, subscribe, and write a reveiw... I can't do the podcast without you.   Thanks!

On Novemeber 22, 2016 a school bus crashed in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Six children were tragically taken from thier families, their communities, and the world.  Was it a bad driver?  Or is it a bad system - a system that is built around two very fragile operator dependancies - perfect school bus drivers and perfect motorist surrounding the bus?
This safety moment was painful to record - and I will bet it will be painful to hear - but listen and think about what this accident should mean for all of us.
Thanks for listening to the podcast.  You are such an important part of this community - we cannot do it without you.  Thanks!

This weeks episode of the PreAccident Podcast features the aurthor of the hot, new safety and reliability book:  "A Reflective Journal; How we makes sense of risk."  It is a great book on risk.
After the last Safety Moment, I figured I owed you a bit of the origin story of how we got to where we go on the notion of risk - and more importantly, where we should be moving in our thinking about risk.
If the way we are thinking about safety is different - it goes without saying that our thinking about risk must also change.  Listen carefully to this podcast and see what you think?
